Tis the season for chaos and clutter. Suddenly your living room is overflowing with magazines and remotes are everywhere, bedrooms have turned into massive clothes piles and bathrooms are littered with makeup, hair accessories – and wait, is that my diamond ring?

Christmas is the most chaotic time in our calendar and as we get caught up in celebrations, gatherings, and get-togethers, managing our home becomes more difficult.

Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful — William Morris

Decluttering before Christmas is ideal because it allows you to clear the house and donate to charity as well as a refresh going into the New Year.

Being minimalist allows you to keep your home manageable and tidier – especially with school holidays and more guests. It’s easier and faster to vacuum, mop, clean inside cabinets, dust tables and wipe counters.

Otherwise, resetting the house doesn’t need to be a complicated process. Scheduling in 2 hours across the weekend for a good dust over while allocating 15 minutes in the morning and again in the afternoon each day to clear surfaces, fluff cushions, unload and load up the dishwasher and complete a quick load of laundry will keep the house reasonably in order.

Planning is essential to managing your home at the best of times. Keeping it simple across Christmas will help you meet the silly season head on.

How to declutter before Christmas

Make a pre-Christmas decluttering plan
Allocate times in the lead up to Christmas to focus on clearing areas of the house – and then, get decluttering.
Go room to room
Move through every room from bedrooms to bathroom, hallways, living rooms and kitchen and clear away items unlikely to be used across the season.
Be smart about storage
Declutter drawers and cupboards to save space. If items aren’t being used, consider donating or repurposing them.
Clear out fridges and freezers
Look over any old or expired food and clear them out. This will make way for all the wonderful fresh Christmas produce ready to hit our Christmas dining tables.
Declutter entertaining platters and tupperware
How many storage containers and platters do you actually need? Repurpose or donate ones that no longer fit into your mood, home or style.
