Preparing for the silly season easily becomes overwhelming and hectic. As the holiday season descends, we can get our preparations together – starting with organising our Halloween decorations.
Holiday decorations have lots of bibs and bobs don’t they? Masses of boxes and bags thrown together. Everything all tangled. It’s a panic attack just waiting to happen

Halloween and holidays are synonymous with excess. But we can change it around to find the magic in simplicity.
Preparing for holidays can lead to accumulating clutter. Don’t let a frightening mess haunt your home long after Halloween has tricked its last treat. By keeping Halloween simple – and tidy – you can enjoy a season of thrills and chills in a clutter-free home.
Create Halloween magic minus the clutter
Halloween is actually the perfect opportunity to review your decorations and declutter. You’ll be organised and ready to embrace the holiday spirit – particularly for the upcoming silly season and into the New Year.
Most importantly, decluttering your decorations helps save money by avoiding buying more or duplicates.
Halloween decorations declutter checklist
Begin with a blank slate
Clear away any current clutter, decluttering your entryway, living room and dining area – all the key spaces when entertaining guests.
Clear the clutter and let in the spirit of Halloween through in your clean and well-decorated home.
Organise your decorations
It’s easy to overspend and waste money on cheap disposable party items. So go for high-quality reusable decorations that can be easily stored and used year after year.
For Halloween decoration, choose decor that can be used across other holidays. Pumpkins, wreaths, candle holders, baskets, ornaments, cushions, napkins and tablecloths will look great – and can potentially be repurposed for Christmas as well.
DIY your decorations
Get creative and make your own Halloween decorations. It’s a fun spooky activity to enjoy with friends and family while adding character to your space.
Set limits
Set a limit on decorations to avoid clutter. Choose your favourite pieces for a greater impact. Across the years, monitor whether you use pieces to keep or pass on.
Declutter after Halloween
After Halloween, immediately declutter and store all your decorations – including Birthdays, Christmas/ Hanukkah, New Year, Easter etc
Separate into piles to be used, repurposed/ recycled or thrown away.
Repurpose, recycle or throw away the unneeded decorations. Donating old décor to your local charity shop (especially before the holidays) makes it easier for someone else to treasure. The decorations may not suit your style anymore, but others will be glad to use them.
Select a box or bag large enough to accommodate everything.
With any unused decorations you still want to keep, store in their special box or bag – until next time.
