Spring cleaning is the chance to hit the reset button on your life
Let the smart 7-step spring cleaning checklist guide you.
Step 1: Declutter
Before cleaning begins, go through each room and organise items into three buckets: Keep, Throw and Repurpose to sell or donate. The process of decluttering will instantly make the house feel more spacious while boosting your mood to tackle the greater job ahead.
Step 2: Wipe down walls
If it has a surface, it can be cleaned – and this includes walls. Between fingerprints, furniture scruffs and crayon masterpieces, walls can do with a good washing once in a while.
We love The Pink Stuff or Gumption Cleaner (especially Eucalyptus) – just watch delicate surfaces.
A couple tablespoons of distilled white vinegar mixed with warm water also does the job – and is kind to paint.
For stubborn smudges, a Magic Eraser does the trick with water and scrub away.
Step 3: Wash windows
Before welcoming warmer temperatures with open windows, remove screens for a deep cleaning with dishwashing liquid soap and water to clean dirt and pollen buildup while improving airflow. Wipe down the glass with a streak-free mirror cloth.
Step 4: Freshen carpets and floors
Sweep through the room, moving furniture to sweep, vacuum and clear all the dust.
Refresh carpets with a simple sprinkle of natural-odour absorber baking soda – over carpet. Let it settle then vacuum up.
Step 5: Dust all surfaces
Microfibre cloths effectively lift and trap dust – without needing chemicals – leaving lint-free, streak-free surfaces.
Step 6: Clean upholstery
Clear food crumbs, wine spills and pet hair from furniture crevices. Vacuum up loose bits, then treat stains with a spray-bottle solution of
1/4 cup of vinegar
3/4 cup of warm water and
1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid soap
Return leather to its natural shine with a mixture of 1/2 cup of olive oil and 1/4 cup of vinegar.
